I was debating whether or not to blog about this, but after lots of thought I decided that I would share this adventure with you and explain the reasoning behind my choice on putting Treycen on Clonidine... What is Clonidine? Clonidine is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure. Clonidine is in a class of medications called centrally acting alpha-agonist hypotensive agents. It works by decreasing your heart rate and relaxing the blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily through the body ... With that definition my pediatrician said it would be great for Treycen because it will allow him to slow down and process his actions... AKA his aggressive, angry behavior!
Treycen is very Strong willed and very stubborn... He has a hard time with his emotions, meaning he gets very angry when he is told NO or if he is feeling attacked or over whelmed... I have tried everything from nutrition to discipline... I have read book after book and asked advice after advice... Nothing I seemed to do was working... Its been 3 years of this but I was still not ready to put him on medication so I kept trying different things and kept reading books it just had to be me I thought. I am the worst parent! I asked Jared several times if I needed to enroll in counseling on how to be a better parent... It was not until an incident occurred over a month ago that I really hit rock bottom... It was time I take Treycen to see his pediatrician and figure out a solution... At first we did a test for ADHD and ADD.. After tests taken by his teacher and by us, that diagnosis was ruled out... So now what I asked Dr. Twiggs? He then prescribed Treycen with Clonidine, I asked if this was common for kids his age and he explained that 3 out of 5 children from the ages 4-7 have this emotional, aggressive behavior and he has prescribed this to several kids around his age and he did state that they will usually grow out of it after age seven... I gladly agreed to put Treycen on medication, because it was either getting some help for him or sending me to a mental hospital...
Treycen has been on Clonidine for about 3 weeks now and I have noticed a huge difference in his behavior... He still has his outbursts and his sassy attitude but he now has more control of it and he has even said he does not feel as angry and he enjoys his medicine... Another positive side effect of Clonidine, it puts Treycen to sleep within 20 minutes and he sleeps soundly all through the night, which is a huge blessing because Treycen has had trouble sleeping since he was born... I had a very hard time agreeing to take such extreme measures on putting my sweet 5 year old on medications.. I myself am not a huge fan of medications and I think its a crutch for most people... I have always believed you can fix anything with exercise and nutrition but like I said I was desperate...
He is my big sweet heart and I am so happy we found something that works for him
and me... He is such a joy to be around and we have so much fun...
I love you my sweet Treycen and you mean the world to me...
I can not wait until Summer 2014, when we take him and Aiden to Disney Land and the San Diego Zoo!
Treycen also loves to collect Toys!
His favorite toys to collect would be the McDonald's toys, lucky for me his grandparents and aunts buy him most of his happy meals and he does not eat more than 1 nugget out of the meal...
You are doing a great job at being a mom.. you are the most patient person I have ever met and I try every day to be more like you!!!
